How Long Does Tree Removal Take? What to Expect on the Day

Updated May 22, 2026  |  Toronto Tree Service Guides  |  By Toronto Tree Services

Most residential tree removals in Toronto take between two and six hours. A small to medium tree in an accessible yard with a three-person crew is typically done in half a day. A large mature tree in a tight backyard, close to a house, fence, or pool, with a full rigging operation, is a full day's work. Very large trees, trees requiring a crane, or jobs with difficult access can run into a second day. Your arborist should give you a realistic time estimate at the quote stage.

What Determines How Long the Job Takes

Five factors drive removal time more than any other: tree size, site access, proximity to structures, the rigging method required, and how the wood is being handled. Understanding each one helps you know what to expect when the crew arrives and why a job that looks straightforward from the street can take significantly longer on the ground.

Tree Size

A tree is not just measured by its height. The trunk diameter, the total weight of the crown, and the number and size of the scaffold branches all determine how much sectioning work is involved. A 15-metre silver maple with a 50cm trunk is meaningfully different from a 15-metre Norway maple with a 25cm trunk even at the same height. Larger diameter wood takes more time to cut through, is heavier to rig and lower, and produces more volume of material to chip and haul.

Site Access

Open access in a front yard with the chipper truck at the curb is the fastest possible scenario. A backyard accessible only through a standard gate, requiring the crew to carry all material through the house or over the fence, adds significant time to every step. Properties where equipment cannot get within a reasonable distance of the tree increase the manual carry distance for every section. A narrow side passage that a tracked mini-skid steer can fit through changes the math considerably compared to hand-carrying everything.

We confirm access at the estimate visit because it directly affects crew size, equipment choices, and timing. Do not assume access is obvious. Let the arborist walk the full route from the tree to the street.

Proximity to Structures

A tree over an open lawn can have its branches dropped and the trunk felled with minimal rigging complexity. A tree growing next to a house, deck, fence, pool, or utility lines requires controlled sectioning where every piece is rigged before it is cut. The climber attaches a rigging line to a branch section, cuts it free, and the ground crew uses the rope to lower it in a controlled direction. This is slower than a straight drop but is the only safe method when there is no clear drop zone. The tighter the space, the more rigging runs are involved, and the longer the job takes.

Typical time ranges for residential tree removals in Toronto:

  • Small tree (under 8m, open access): 1 to 2 hours
  • Medium tree (8 to 15m, standard backyard): 3 to 5 hours
  • Large tree (15 to 20m, tight backyard): 5 to 8 hours, full day
  • Very large tree (over 20m or complex rigging): 1 to 2 days
  • Crane-assisted removal: Add 2 to 4 hours for crane setup and takedown
  • Stump grinding (same visit): Add 30 to 90 minutes depending on stump size

A Typical Removal Day: What the Crew Does

The crew arrives and parks the truck and chipper at the curb or nearest accessible point. The arborist or lead climber walks the site with you, confirms the scope, checks the drop zones, and confirms any specific instructions like areas to protect or wood you want retained. Traffic control cones go out if the job is near the street. The work area is set up with safety barriers or tape if needed.

The climber ascends with rigging lines. On a rigged removal, the climber works from the top down, removing the outermost smaller material first, then progressively working inward and downward to the larger scaffold branches and finally the trunk sections. Ground crew feeds branches into the chipper continuously and manages rigging lines. Log sections too large for the chipper are bucked to manageable rounds and stacked or loaded.

When the tree is down to the stump, the crew sweeps and rakes the area, removing all chip blowback, sawdust, and debris. If stump grinding is included, the grinder comes in at this point. After grinding, the chip pile is raked level or the chips are loaded and removed if that was specified. The crew does a final walk of the property before leaving.

Crane-Assisted Removals

Some Toronto tree removals require a crane. This is typically necessary when the tree is very large and in a location where even controlled rigging cannot produce a safe drop sequence, when the access path for material is too restricted for conventional work, or when the job timeline needs to be compressed due to emergency circumstances. Crane work requires additional street access planning, sometimes a temporary road closure permit from the City, and coordination between the crane operator and the climbing crew.

Crane-assisted removals are significantly more expensive than conventional rigged removals due to crane rental and operator costs, and they require more setup time. If a crane is needed for your job, your arborist will tell you at the estimate stage. Jobs that appear to need a crane at first glance often do not once the site is assessed carefully. And jobs that looked accessible can turn out to require one when site conditions are fully understood.

What Slows Jobs Down

A few things reliably add time to what was quoted as a straightforward job. Finding decay in the tree after work begins can change the rigging strategy because decayed wood does not hold rigging attachments the same way sound wood does. Underground utilities or irrigation lines not identified before work begins can require pauses. Unexpected fence sections that need temporary removal to move material. Rain during the job, which makes climbing surfaces hazardous and can halt aerial work. And neighbours who need to be temporarily accommodated for access.

None of these are within your control or ours, but discussing them upfront with your arborist so there is a plan for the most likely scenarios avoids delays that could have been anticipated.

After the Tree Is Down: Stump and Cleanup

A clean site is part of the job. All chip material is removed unless you specifically ask to keep the chips for mulching. The area around the stump is raked and cleared. If the stump is being ground the same day, that work follows immediately. If stump grinding is scheduled as a separate visit, we will have completed the Ontario One Call utility locate in advance and the grinding crew arrives ready to work.

Lawn damage is inevitable on any job that involves equipment in a yard. We take care to minimize it and repair obvious damage, but some tire or track marks in soft ground are part of the deal. Spring and summer jobs after rain are harder on lawns than dry conditions or frozen ground. If lawn damage is a concern, discuss it at the estimate and we can plan around it where possible.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to remove a large tree in Toronto?

A large tree in a residential Toronto backyard typically takes a full day for a three-person crew working with standard climbing and rigging equipment. Very large trees in tight spaces, trees over structures, or trees requiring a crane can take two days. The stump grinding can usually be completed the same day or scheduled as a separate visit.

Does the crew clean up the debris on the same day?

Yes, for standard residential removals. The crew chips all branch material on site and hauls it away. Log sections too large for the chipper are cut to manageable sizes and either hauled away or, if you want the wood, left stacked on your property. The site should be broom-clean before the crew leaves, with the stump at the agreed height or ground if that was included.

Do I need to be home when the tree is removed?

You do not need to be present throughout the job, but we recommend being available at the start so the crew can walk through the scope, confirm access arrangements, and address any last-minute site questions. For jobs that require fence removal or use of a neighbour's driveway for access, having those arrangements confirmed before the crew arrives saves time.

What happens if the job takes longer than expected?

Reputable tree services quote based on a site assessment and stand behind that quote regardless of how long the job takes. If you received a fixed written quote, you pay that price. Changes to scope, such as discovering additional root complications or a significantly larger stump than expected, should be discussed and agreed on before any additional work begins. Get scope changes in writing.

Can tree removal be done in winter in Toronto?

Yes, and in some cases winter is preferable. Frozen ground protects lawns from equipment damage. Leafless canopies make hazard assessment and rigging easier. Dormant season pruning reduces disease exposure for susceptible species like oak and elm. The main practical constraints are extreme cold affecting equipment and crew safety, and ice or snow conditions affecting access. Most Toronto tree removals can proceed through all but the most severe winter conditions.
